Forxiga is a well-functioning pharmacological agent designed especially to treat the diabetes mellitus type II. It works by swiftly reducing the reabsorption rate of glucose in kidneys, which leads to the rapid reduction of the blood sugar level lasting for up to twenty-four hours.

The single-agent therapy is usually prescribed when the diet and physical exercises do not provide satisfyingly high levels of the glycemic control in those patients who are unable to use metformin because of the developed intolerance.

It is also often prescribed as a part of the additional combined treatment in order to achieve and maintain a plausible control of glucose.

How to take

The attending physician must calculate the dosage of the pharmacological agent on an individual basis. Whether it is expected to be taken together with other hypoglycemic agents or used in the single-substance therapy, the usual dosage is about 1 tablet containing 10 mg of the active substance that must be taken once a day, in the morning.

The expected favorable effect provided by the pills mainly depends on the normal functioning of the kidneys. If it is taken as a part of the combined treatment with insulin, you should consider reducing the dosage of either the drug or insulin in order to avoid hypoglycemia.

Significant adjustments of the planned dose are not necessary for people with mild disorders of the liver and/or kidneys. In case of serious liver disorders, the dosage may be reduced to 5 mg taken once per day.

Certain precautions are necessary when prescribing the pharmacological agent in elderly people since the frequency of various disorders of kidneys sizably grows with age. In order to avoid hazardous outcomes and maintain the most effective therapy, the use of the drug in such patients must be additionally monitored.

Safety information

The therapeutic agent must not be prescribed to those patients who suffer from one of the following diseases:

• any type of metabolic acidosis;
• severe renal impairment;
• dehydration;

• allergic reactions to any component of the medication;
• severe microbial or viral infections;
• acute or chronic illnesses that can cause tissue hypoxia, such as heart or kidney failure;
• myocardial infarction;
• chronic alcoholism.

• constipation;
• different infections of the urinary tract;

• nausea;
• a backache;

It is also prohibited for children and pregnant women.

There is no evidence suggesting that the medication may in any way harm the newborn babies by passing to the breast milk. However, the use of this medicational agent through this period must be controlled by a professional physician.

Side effects

The most occurring unfavorable symptom that may be caused by the prolonged therapy with this drug is hypoglycemia. In order to avoid this effect, you have to scrupulously monitor your blood sugar level and adhere to the appropriate diet. As to other negative reactions, most of them are not dose-dependent and rarely occur when following the prescribed schedule.
